As if trying to get rid of his demons, Hunter Biden, son of presidential candidate Joe Well, has decided to reveal the details of his addiction to alcohol and drugs, and his relationship with his older brother's widow in a lengthy interview at The New Yorker. The time to talk is not coincidental. The 49-year-old lawyer has turned to the U.S. magazine in an attempt to get ahead of any possible controversy and not harm his father's election race to the White House. In fact, Donald Trump already attacked in May and said the former Vice President of the United States should be investigated for his son's business with China during the Obama era. Hunter sent a message to the representative in the article: "Fuck you, Mr. President."
In late 2017, Joe Biden published a book titled Promise Me,Dad. In one passage he recounts the hopes he had on his firstborn, Joseph "Beau" Biden, who died in 2015 from a brain tumor. "Beau Biden, at 45, was Joe Biden 2.0. I had all the best of me, but without the programming errors," he says. "He was very sure that one day he would run for the presidential election, and with the help of his brother, he would win." That brother was Hunter. The man who after graduating in History was forced to sign up for Law because his partner, with whom he had been dating for three months, was pregnant. The man in and out of rehab centers because of his addictions. The man the Republicans looked at with suspicion of establishing business with China and Ukraine while his father held a position in the Administration. That was the man who carried on his shoulders the responsibility of making his older brother, Iraq veteran and attorney general of his native Delaware, president of the United States.
By Christmas 1972, Joe Biden had already been elected a delaware senator, but had not yet sworn in. He stayed fine-tuning details in Washington and his wife Neilia traveled with the three children (Beau, Hunter and Noemi) to the family home in Wilmington. While there, the woman suffered a car accident that ended her life and that of her daughter. According to The New Yorker, the first thing Hunter did when he woke up in the hospital was look at his brother one older and say "I love you, I love you, I love you." Joe Biden took office in that clinic's room. At the first meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous attended by the Democrat's son, he was accompanied by his brother. When Hunter started doing well with his lobwhoist signatures, he helped settle the college credit that Beau was dragging. The unwavering union between the two was one of the pillars that sustained him standing in the midst of his infighting. But that rock went in 2015, leaving a widowed woman and two children (one named Hunter, like his uncle), and a broken brother.
When Beau died, Hunter already had three children with his wife Kathleen Buhle. The couple, who were going through difficult times, had come to an agreement: if Hunter started drinking again, he would have to leave home. A day after his twenty-second anniversary, Hunter did not attend the couples therapy session, drank a bottle of vodka and moved, notes the text signed by Adam Entous. In the midst of that emotional storm, the tabloids posted that the lawyer had been discovered on a dating website for married people. Hunter denied it, but two months later he broke away for good from Kathleen. His only refuge then was Hallie Biden, his brother's widow.
"We were sharing a very specific pain," Hunter explains in the aforementioned article. "I started thinking of Hallie as the only person in my life who understood my loss." When Joe Biden's son was recovering from a high-ranking cocaine-related episode, he became Hallie's formal partner. Another juicy headline for the press: 'Beau Biden's widow has a relationship with her late husband's brother,' the Washington Postpublished. After being pressured by his son, Barack Obama's Vice President of Administration made a public statement supporting the relationship. But they didn't last long, and in early 2018 Hunter moved to Los Angeles alone. "The idea was to disappear completely," the lawyer in the American environment acknowledges.
Two months ago, Hunter Biden met Melissa Cohen, a 32-year-old South African. A week later they married in California. According to The New Yorker,he called his father to tell him after the ceremony. The presidential candidate was on speaker when he said, "Thank you for giving my son the courage to love again." To which Hunter replied: "Dad, I always had love. And the only thing that allowed me to see it was the fact that you never gave up, you've always believed in me."
